The main prison buildings were built as an orphanage in the 1890s which closed in 1956. The site opened as a women’s prison in 1962 when female prisoners from Strangeways were transferred in.

From 1983 Young Offenders were admitted and in 1999 a wing was added to accommodate unsentenced female prisoners following the closure of Risley’s remand centre, increasing the prison size by 60%.

Prison Phone have been saving inmates at HMP Styal money on their calls from the prison to any UK mobile phone since 2013.

We do this by allocating a dedicated and secure local number to your mobile phone, this means when the inmate at Styal prison calls the new local number we have provided they will be charged at just the local landline rate (around 10p per minute) rather than the standard mobile rate (which is around 40p per minute).

This in turn helps to stretch the inmates PINS phone credit further and reduces the amount you need to send in for them to top up!

Here’s some facts about Styal Prison

HMP Styal is a closed category women’s prison in Styal, Cheshire. Opened in 1962, the prison has capacity to hold 486 female inmates.

There are 16 detached Victorian houses, with mainly shared accommodation for approximately 20 women. Some have specialist functions, like Oak house, the first night centre, holding women for between 24 and 48 hours on reception, Barker house, used for induction,  while Reach house consists of the drug recovery unit. The mother and baby unit has spaces for nine mothers and 10 babies. Waite wing, holding 140 women on two spurs, consists of a mixture of single and double cells in standard cellular accommodation and housed women needing greater supervision, including those on the basic regime and those on suicide and self-harm prevention procedures. The segregation unit holds up to nine women in cellular accommodation and the Dove Centre, a nine-bed unit, offers therapeutic support to women with complex needs.

Claire McMenemy left MHP Styal in 2015. She told the housing officers that she had no accommodation, so they “offered to give me a tent’. She asked where to put it, and they replied with : “pitch it outside the prison building.”
