HMP Wormwood Scrubs is a category B adult male prison, which accepts inmates from courts in the local catchment area. It has a capacity of 1,279 and is situated on Du Cane Road in London. The prison was originally built in the Victorian era; though over the years, extra wings have been added and refurbished. It is often referred to as ‘The Scrubs’.

The prison came under fire in a 2015 report that has branded the it in “poor condition” this has been said to have been toned down as a leaked report that was handed to a journalist at the Guardian branded the prison as in a “shameful condition”

Here’s some facts about Wormwood Scrubs Prison

HMP Wormwood Scrubs is a category B men’s prison in the London borough of White City. Opened in 1874, the prison gas capacity to hold 1,279 male inmates.

The prison’s accommodation consists of wings A-E. A wing holds remand and short sentenced inmates. B wing holds mostly full-time workers. C wing is where the Integrated Drug Treatment System is. D holds those in which the cell-sharing risk is “high”. E wing accommodates prisoners attending education services.

The HMIP have said the prison is “rat-infested and overcrowded”, and the number of assaults on inmates and staff was double that found in similar institutions.

A strike in 2016 saw over 50 officers walk out, resulting in prisoners being locked up and visits being cancelled. The staff walked out over fears to their safety as drugs and weapons are “flooded” in the prison.
