HMP Wellingborough was officially closed in 2012, although it is still being retained as a reserve prison in the event of other establishments being at capacity. Prior to its closure, the prison was a category C establishment, holding adult males. It originally opened as a borstal in 1963 and continued to hold young offenders until 1990, when it was re-roled.
