The new Prison Programme has now moved one huge step closer to beginning it was announced yesterday The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has announced.
The Minister of State for Prisons and Probation Alex Chalk stated that the plans for the expansion next to Gartree Prison near Harborough Market propose for a new Category B Training prison next to HMP Gartree.
Gartree is also a Category B Training prison. Their proposals are to build a 1,715-place prison with seven prison blocks holding around 240 male prisoners each, as well as ancillary buildings.
They have already worked quickly with other plans for new Prisons such as:
– HMP Five Wells, Northamptonshire: Started in May 2019 and it will be
ready to receive prisoners in early 2022.
– Glen Parva, Leicestershire: Plans started Summer 2020 and it
is on schedule to receive prisoners in Spring/Summer 2023.
– Next to HMP Full Sutton, Yorkshire: This is the next big project.
The plans also negotiate the Green Prison statement on how it will also be environmentally friendly for the country.
The multi-million pound blueprint also features extending the staff car park and upgrading and improving the ageing prison.
The massive project will generate up to 700 jobs and plough about £75 million into the local economy if it’s backed by Harborough council.
