HMP Bronzefield is currently the only purpose-built, privately run women’s prison in the country. It is privately managed by Sodexo, and holds category A adult and young offender female inmates. With a capacity of 527, it’s the largest women’s prison in Europe. The prison opened in 2004, and since then, further extension work has taken place. Here’s some facts about Bronzefield Prison

HMP Bronzefield is the only purpose-built, privately run category A equivalent women’s prison in the UK. It is a closed prison with the capacity to hold 527 inmates.

It is located in Ashford, Kent, near Heathrow Airport.

According to the report of an unannounced inspection in November 2015, the levels of violence and serious incidents were low, but many prisoners still felt unsafe.

HMP Bronzefield has three main residential units, holding approximately 135 women each, and a fourth for “enhanced and first stage lifer and long-term prisoners”, holding 77 women.

Notable prisoners include Mairead Philpott, charged for arson and murder after her house was set alight by petrol, killing all of her children. She was arrested in 2013, and sentenced to 17 years, meaning she is not to be released until 2030.

Visiting hours are 14:15 – 17:15 Monday to Thursday, 09:30-11:45 and 14:15-16:30 Saturday, and 14:15 – 16:30 Sunday.
