HMP Downview is a closed women’s prison, housing both adult and young offending females. When it first opened in 1979, it was a category C male prison, which it remained until 2001, when it was converted to an establishment for women. However, in 2013, the Ministry for Justice announced intentions to change it back to a male prison. It currently holds both convicted and remanded prisoners and has a capacity of 358.
