HMP Downview is a closed women’s prison, housing both adult and young offending females. When it first opened in 1979, it was a category C male prison, which it remained until 2001, when it was converted to an establishment for women. However, in 2013, the Ministry for Justice announced intentions to change it back to a male prison. It currently holds both convicted and remanded prisoners and has a capacity of 358. Here’s some facts about Downview Prison

HMP Downview is a closed category women’s prison in Sutton, Surrey. It can hold up to 355 adult and juvenile female inmates.

The prison opened in 1979, and was originally a category C male prison, but was converted to a female closed prison in 2001.

In 2013, the Ministry of Justice announced intentions to convert the prison back to a male prison, and it closed in 2014 to prepare for the change. In 2016, the prison reopened as a women’s jail to take inmates from the closing of HMP Holloway, from which it took a lot of prisoners from.

According to the latest inspection report, the prison is made of four wings. A wing is the induction unit, with 44 single cells with in-cell sanitation and electrics. B wing is a general wing with 44 single cells with in-cell sanitation and electrics. C is also general, with 206 single cells and three double cells across eight landings. D wing is a resettlement unit for enhanced level prisoners with 40 single cells with in-cell sanitation, shower facilities and electrics.

Visiting hours are between 14:00 – 16:00 on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
