HMP Dumfries is a local adult and young adult male prison, serving the courts of Dumfries and Galloway. It has a capacity of 200, making it one of the smallest prisons in the country, and specialises in holding short-term offenders who need to be separated from other inmates due to the nature of their offence. It normally holds up to 80 male prisoners who are remanded in custody for trial and those convicted but remanded for reports.

HMP Dumfries is a prison in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway. Opened in 1863, the prison has capacity to hold 200 inmates.

There are five main residential halls A, B, C, D and E and a basement B Zero which includes prisoners on observation/separation.

Bank robber Russel Snowdon was sentenced to ten years in prison after blowing up an ATM to steal £45 thousand in Langholm. He claimed, as the cash was all Scottish, that he’d sold a car. He then used £1,700 to go on holiday to The Gambia with his lover days after the raid. As he returned to the UK, he was caught by the police, and pleaded guilty in High Court, Glasgow, to stealing £45,080 from the RBS and attempted to break out from Dumfries Jail while on remand in March 2017. Judge Lady Dorrian mentioned that he already had a string of convictions for “violence and dishonesty”
