HMP Leyhill is a category D open prison situated in South Gloucestershire, and is the only minimum security prison in the south west England area. The prison was originally a hospital, treating those injured in the war. However, in 1946, it became a prison; and in the 1970s and 1980s, it was rebuilt to create new accommodation for inmates. Did you know?

HMP Leyhill is a category D prison in the Totworth parish of Gloucestershire. Opened as a prison in 1946, the prison has capacity to hold 526 men.

There are three units: A (holds 208 prisoners), B (holds 199 prisoners) and C (holds 108 prisoners). All accomodation is in single-rooms, with the exception of 10 double rooms, spread between A and B units.

Fred West, serial killer, spent ten months here after committing theft in 1970. He served between 1970-71, and when he was released, his daughter Charmaine had been killed by his latest wife Rosemary West.

The film Greenfingers (2000) is loosely based around a the story in which a group of prisoners won an award in the Chelsea Flower Show. Gardening is a successful part of HMP Leyhill’s training program.

Visiting hours are 13:30 – 15:30 Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
