HMP Northumberland is a category C prison, with a current capacity of 1,354. It was formed in 2011 from the merger of two prisons situated only a few hundred metres apart; HMP Castington and HMP Acklington. In 2013, Sodexo, a private company, formally took over management of the prison, and the Howard League for Penal Reform recently reported that it was ‘failing miserably’ in its task to operate effectively as a penal establishment. Prison Phone have been saving inmates at HMP Northumberland money on their calls from the prison to any UK mobile phone since 2013.

We do this by allocating a dedicated and secure local number to your mobile phone, this means when the inmate at Northumberland prison calls the new local number we have provided they will be charged at just the local landline rate (around 10p per minute) rather than the standard mobile rate (which is around 40p per minute).

This in turn helps to stretch the inmates PINS phone credit further and reduces the amount you need to send in for them to top up!

Here’s some facts about Northumberland Prison

HMP Northumberland is a category C prison in Morpeth, Northumberland. Formed in 2011, as a merger between HMP Acklington and HMP Castington, the prison has capacity to hold 1,354 male inmates.

There are 15 house blocks, five of which holding vulnerable prisoners, including sex offenders. House blocks range from 40 to 240 beds and are of a variety of layouts and ages. There are two induction units (one for vulnerable prisoners), dedicated Integrated Drug Treatment System (IDTS) units, drug recovery wing, drug-free wing, category D/low risk unit, and an older vulnerable prisoner unit.

In March 2016, Daniel Newton, an inmate inside HMP Northumberland, assaulted a guard with a table leg while ‘high’ on Spice (a “legal high”) and ” hooch” (an illicit home brewed alcohol). He was in the process of attacking another prisoner when Daniel Crook, a witnessing officer, saw the assault to the guard. The officer “told the defendant to drop the table leg. He was about 4ft away at the time. He was ignored and so he deployed his baton. The defendant continued to hold the table leg with both hands and swung it and struck the prison officer on the left thigh.”
