HMP Oakwood was originally called Featherstone 2 and was designed to be one of the government’s controversial ‘titan’ establishments. However, the prison was then downsized and now has a capacity of 1,605. It became operational in 2012 and is managed privately by G4S. Despite not being a ‘titan’ prison, the establishment still remains one of the largest in the UK. It is a category C adult male prison.

HMP Oakwood is a category C prison in Featherstone, Staffordshire. Opened in April 2012, the prison has capacity to hold 1,605 male inmates.

The prison has 6 wings (A-F) named after species of tree. Ash wing holds the vulnerable prisoner population. Beech and Cedar hold the general population. Douglas holds the “lifer” population. Elm holds the general population, and is the family unit. Fir is the segregation unit.

A prison officer was attacked in February 2017 by an inmate. A single punch from the inmate fractured the officer’s skull and caused bleeding from the brain. This occurred months after Paul Hobbs attacked a different guard with a mug. The pair fell on the cell bed, Hobbs grabbed a mug, smashed it over the officer’s head, and proceeded to attempt to gouge his eyes with this fingers

  • The prison got its name from the oak tree in neighbouring Boscobel Wood, where Charles II supposedly hid from Oliver Cromwell’s men during the Civil War.

  • A 2013 report heavily criticised the prison, noting the high levels of violence. Frances Crook of the Howard League for Penal Reform commented: ‘It is well-known in prison circles that this institution is referred to as ‘Jokewood’… but this isn’t a joke – it is deeply serious.’
