Here's some facts about Polmont prison

Did you know?

HMP Polmont is a Young Offenders Institution in Reddingmuirhead (near Polmont), Falkirk. Opened as a borstal in 1911, the prison was designed to hold 830 inmates between the ages of 16 and 21. Polmont is the largest YOI of its kind in Scotland.

In May 2017, it was found that a third of young inmates in HMYOI Polmont had no post-release accommodation. David Strang, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland, said “despite the excellent work undertaken by the Throughcare Support Officers, 34 per cent of the young men they work with are not provided with an address to live prior to liberation”.

Teenage inmates climbed on top of a skip, and refused to come down until they received their bizarre request: a McDonald’s Big Mac. They stayed up there for three hours, and they descended at 4pm on the 7th May 2017.
