HMP Werrington is a juvenile centre, accepting only inmates between the ages of 15 and 18. The building originally opened in 1895 as an industrial school, and was purchased by the Prison system in 1955. It converted to a youth custody centre in 1985 before finally becoming a juvenile centre in 1988. The prison has a capacity of 162 and is situated in the village of Werrington in Staffordshire. Did you know?

HMP Werrington is a male juvenile’s prison in Werrington, Staffordshire. Opened in 1895, as an industrial school, the prison has capacity to hold 160 young inmates.

There are two accommodation blocks, Doulton and Denby units. Doulton consists of wings A & B: A wing holds sentenced young people, and B wing holds remand and sentenced inmates. Denby consists of C1 & C2: C1 contains the reintegration and support unit, and C2 holds inmates in temporary license or enhanced status.

HMYOI Werrington became the first ever secure establishment to receive dyslexia-friendly quality kite mark from the British Dyslexia Association.

Despite a reduction in violent incidents between 2013 and 2015, there was till levels of violence described as “too high”. 37% of inmate reported they had been hit or kicked during their time there.

Visiting hours are 14:15 – 16:15 Monday-Thursday, and 14:30 – 16:30 in Saturdays and Sundays.

  • An 18 year old inmate (Ryan Youll) launched a 15 second attack on a teacher in August 2017, as Neil Scragg (the teacher) was left with cuts & bruises and a permanent scar beneath his eye. Youll was sentenced to an extra twelve months.
